Best Impressions Newsletter

May 31, 2007 Vol 1 Issue 22

Good Thursday to all!

I got quite a bit of response from the article about my singing escapade. One was from Rich. Part of his note reads: “I was told all my life ‘I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket!’ What’s with the ‘bucket’ theme???”

It’s sad that neither of us feel competent to sing, but even sadder is the fact that two people had their lives altered by careless words. Words have meaning. I know that sounds like a “DUH” moment, but think about how many times you have altered your behavior, negative or positive, by something someone said.

Words have the power to alter lives... They can boost confidence, enhance self-esteem, express encouragement, and even promote dreams, or do just the opposite. All to often words come out with little conscious thought. People rarely stop to think about what judgments, opinions or limiting beliefs roll out of their mouths.

Words that alter lives do not even have to be words spoken in anger. Just this morning, I was emailing a friend about something I believed would be good for them to know and I caught myself writing, “You should….” Changing that to “Something for you to consider…”, puts the power of the decision with the recipient. My friend, Michael uses the phrase “You would know best…” another way (of many) to hand the power of the message to the receiver.

Align your words with your intention and desired outcome next time there is something to say. Consider words of possibility instead of impossibility, words of encouragement instead of discouragement.

Have a great day in whatever your adventure,
To Success! To Life!

Three Tips for Successful Communication

• Consider your audience and objectives. What response do you want your listeners or readers to have? We each bring a unique truth and perspectives to the world—consider choosing positive words to express your individuality. Try using language softeners such as; “Have you considered…” “I’m sure you have already thought about….” If you anticipate a positive reception for your message, you can be more direct.

• Determine what your audience values and deliver it. Benefits to the reader are more effective than the features of your offer. Remember, the reader is asking “What’s in it for me?” Establish common ground, (especially at beginning of your message) to make your audience more receptive.

• There are advantages and disadvantages to the many ways to deliver a message. How does your audience like to receive information? Face-to-face communication can be preferable to build rapport. If you need a permanent record or have complex information, consider making it visual, or written. Remember do not send sensitive information by email.
