Best Impressions Newsletter

February 8 , 2007 Vol 1 Issue 6

Good Thursday to all!

An interesting similarity came up while coaching 2 clients this week.  Both have great ideas, but don't know how to move forward. They are paralyzed. They are smart, creative people who have built successful businesses. They couldn't have gotten where they are without moving forward at sometime in their life.

I can only guess from my own experience that the first part of the problem might be fear:

  • of the unknown
  • not being good enough
  • being judged
  • or worse, being too good
"Oh, no, what if I'm as successful as I know I can be?"

We all know it's NONSENSE, but many of us still believe it. I know I've been there. It can take me months to finally get working on a personal project (no deadlines). I'll spend huge amounts of time constantly examining, and re-examining, figuring and re-figuring, re-designing... losing interest or giving up, just to start back at a new beginning again. So today's tip is for all who have something they have been meaning to get done.

Have a great day in whatever your adventure.

To Success!
Sharon

Doctor, doctor, give me the news I've got a bad case of stalled-out, going-nowhere blues...

  • Do you have great ideas stuck in your head?
  • Do you know what needs to move but grunting won't budge it?
  • Do you flatline until deadlines?

Diagnosis: Perfection Paralysis

As I work through my own Perfection Paralysis, it is not so much the quest for perfection as it is not having all the facts, not knowing. I find that not having a clear picture of what it is I'm working on can cause me to stop.

Rx: Marketing is more important than mastery.

Solution: Ask around. Market your product/service before you start. Tell your clients, friends and maybe even vendors what you are working on and ask, "If you could get 'My Product/Service,' what would you like to have it do for you?" Make "Just ask." your mantra. You'll be amazed at how much good information they will share with you. They are a wealth of knowledge, and your project may actually start to "build itself."

As the project continues to evolve, you will see that Perfection Paralysis does not have to be fatal to your success. You do realize that you have survived everything you have attempted to date... don't you?

The mastery/perfection comes from the continual development and redevelopment through each phase of growth. At times it might feel painful but take 2 aspirin, Get it Good and Get it Out!
